Missing Nan

Sweet Nelly Greene……………….

I am so thankful of my time I had on the day you died. To be able to feel your hand squeeze mine as I held it and to know you knew I was with you. To have had the opportunity to kiss your cheek and touch your hair and thank you for what you gave me in my life. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to say you were just the greatest, and finally to say how happy I was to see that you are finally going to be with poppa. Oh how wonderful it was to hear all the noise in your room last Saturday. All the family together again… Laughing, singing, talking. Wasn’t it just so wonderful that you also got to see your life partner in mischief – Lucy. It is just so wonderful that at the time you left us we had all shared such a day as a family and been together for you.

The time had come where I had to witness you grow old (gracefully so may I add). My heart would often ache to see you so frail. I would sit and talk about all the old days we had together and I always managed to get that amazing laugh out of you. This made me so happy. I would never tire from listening to the stories of your life.

I have no memories of you ever being angry or upset. You seemed to just thrive on providing us with your granny love. There are so many memories. You were my nanna, you were my friend, you were my second mummy, and I have been so blessed to have been able to have spent 36 of my years with you. Every single memory is a happy one, and it makes me smile.

I give thanks to God for the joy you - this amazing women - has brought to my life. I am going to miss you so terribly. I take comfort however that you are finally at peace and contentment in Heaven with your beloved ‘blue eyes’ – the love of your life.

At the time you died I could see your husband standing with his hand outstretched to you. You walked toward him with a beautiful soft face and said “hello Norman – I’m sorry it has taken so long”, and then you joined hands. You are now united together forever. In the background stood Aunty Iris softly smiling and saying “Hello Nel, it’s so good to see you”.

Your life is now so utterly fulfilled and complete. I will forever feel you around me and never forget you. I take comfort that you will always be looking over me.

I love you nanna.

From your ‘Beautiful’ granddaughter, Daniellea Maria…..

Memoirs from Granddaughter to Nanna

I awake in the morning, stumble downstairs all sleepy eyed and begin making my breakfast. The toast pops and the aroma rising to my nostrils is one that tickles my senses and opens up my memory. I am around 7 to 10 years old, and Nanna with her blue rinse, soft perfect hair is making what we kids would call “thick bouncy toast”. It is smeared with the gentle hand of perfection that only she can master, and for the piece de rĂ©sistance – vegemite! Only Nanna knew how to produce one of the most gourmet toast delights of all time. She would spend up to ½ an hour making this toast, because we don’t stop at one or two, she must make me 8 slices of this pure delightful first meal of the day.

Now, the bread used for this toast is very special. I wait anxiously by the front door for the red Tip Top truck to arrive and deliver our fresh un-sliced bread. The bread arrives still warm and is place into a chequered tea towel. I pick up the bread and must somehow get it from the front door to the kitchen, but am unable to resist and Nanna receives it with the ends all nibbled away – the temptation just can’t be resisted.

I am sure I could produce a novel of my life with this extraordinary woman who I had the privilege of having her as my Nanna. Highlights of memories that pop into my mind on an almost daily basis I can list:

The Love:
· Her loud and cheery laugh.
· Her touch, her smell, her smile.
· The sweet sounds of Nanna singing –
“Nanna’s little darling girls, darling girls, darling girls”.
· Having us on our knees praying to a statue of Mary at the time mum had a toe operation.
· Blue Hair rinses
· Dabbing our little foreheads with lavender if we had a headache.
· Having our soft bottoms covered in talcum powder after she had vigorously dried us.
· Snuggling up in bed, with my sister, in a caravan in Tumut because she was so cold. Janine warmed her up like a hot water bottle.
· A special treat of icecream on the way home after school
· Nanna and Aunty Iris holding hands whenever they are together.

In the Kitchen:
· Vegemite on Toast (bouncy thick Tip Top toast x 8 slices), Powdered milk, carving a huge pork at Christmas in 35 deg heat.
· Old thick heavy crockery and old aluminium tins with dents in them.
· Climbing up a stool to get to the top kitchen cupboard to get to all the old watches.
· The bowling trophy that gives hours of fun spinning it around.
· Baked Dinners – and that will be 6 baked potatoes for me please! I beat Poppa’s record.
· Skippy corn flakes with powdered milk.
· Heated debates at Christmas Lunch – Jill and Poppa were always great entertainment.
· Ears being blown away at the sounds of ABC news
· Splitting peas at the kitchen table. (Janine was always naughty throwing them on the floor).
· Sweet Peas and Chokos

Being Naughty:
· Going through Nanna’s wardrobes when she wasn’t looking and finding her furry fox.
· Big, huge, gigantic yellow bath and lathering bottoms of soap sliding down the bath.
· Swinging on the front gate.
· Being told to stop swinging on the front gate.
· Poppa’s scary whip.

The Fun:
· Long trips in 40 deg heat to Temora with a dog, a bird, 2 kids & Nan. Oh the smell!
· Riding our scooters up and down the ramp.
· Sitting enjoying the afternoon sun on the front verandah.
· Birds of Paradise growing by the house
· Playing with 1950 old tin cars
· Barbie dolls in the hallways.
· Playing in the garage and garden
· Rice Power Granny – go, go, go

Domestic Life:
· Washing in the big concrete tub and scrubbing with the old wooden board.
· Twin tub washing machine. (Why can’t she see that automatics are more efficient).
· Polishing and waxing the floor.
· Playing for hours in the yard
· Green swirly carpet and bamboo wall paper.
· Warmth of the old oil heater.
· Poppa’s pipe
· NORMANNNN!! The call for morning tea and lunch.
· Wet damp musty smells of under the house.
· Sprinklers running in the fernery.

Holidays
· The little old caravan
· Nanna drinking Southern Comfort the first time – ‘Oh Dear’ she giggled, “I think I’ve had too much Southern Comfort – I’m flying out the roof”. We had a great laugh.
· The juicy taste of bream medallions – All these fish were not much bigger than a goldfish.
· The smell of the green canvas on the annexe and mozzy nets over our beds.
· Swirling our toes in the wet sand catching pippis and pumping nippers out of the sand.
· Riding in the boat and fishing – Oh that great bream at Lake Tabourie..

Don Juan Demarco - some useful info for the gentleman

When I say that all my woman are dazzling beauties, they object. The nose of this one is too large; the hips of another, they are too wide; perhaps the breasts of a third, they are too small. But I see these women for how they truly are... glorious, radiant, spectacular, and perfect... because I am not limited by my eyesight.

Women react to me in the way they do, Don Octavio, because they sense that I search out the beauty that lies within, until it overwhelms everything else. And then they cannot avoid their desire, to release that beauty and envelope me in it. - Don Juan DeMarco

CHRISTMAS 2006

As you can see I am way behind in postings. Christmas 2006, we enjoyed a wonderful lunch with our family. Lunch was hosted by my cousin Inga and her husband Cameron. It was a fantastic day and we all enjoyed getting together as we don't get to see each other very often. Little Charlotte and Micah had a most wonderful time and kept us entertained all day.

Precious things in life - dear little Charlotte

I'm very proud to be an aunty to many children. I am probably closest to my sister's daughter Charlotte. She is very much a little Bender and is totally crazy like myself and my sister. She is 4 years old and a real chatter box. She has such a spunky personality - she is my little Lottie.

She will however be moving to Hong Kong shortly with her parents and she will be missed very much. However, the experience she will have to grow and learn in another country will be just wonderful. I am sure her life will be enriched and her eyes will be open to the world.

Life in the Valley

We enjoy living down in the Woronora Valley. It is so peaceful and relaxing. We feel like we are on holidays everyday. We have a lot of wildlife and lovely views over the bush and river. The people in the valley are all very friendly and there is a real sense of community which is missing in today's busy modern world.
